Tommy Lee · 40-inch kanji heads
Made in 2014 for Mötley Crüe’s Final Tour (the first one): a 40-inch bass drum head decal for Tommy Lee: the kanji 律 with トミーリー (Tommy Lee in katakana) beneath. The art was not supplied as vector, so I converted it to vector to select the proper black and gray values, then got it onto the head exactly as intended.

Problem
The art was not supplied as vector, so I converted it to vector to select the proper black and gray values. Neutral grays are among the hardest things to hold in print: they drift warm, cool or green easily, and at 40 inches every edge of the brushwork shows.
Process
Converted the supplied file to vector, prepped it for print and handled the print production, working for Sic Skinz Custom Drum Wraps, making sure the gray tones printed neutral and the edges stayed crisp at full size.
Result
Remo sent me Tommy Lee’s custom-sized 40-inch head. I pre-mounted the graphics, packaged it and shipped it to Mötley Crüe’s studio in California. The finished heads mounted on Tommy Lee’s Pearl kit.
Hired by Sic Skinz to print and produce drumheads for national touring acts.
