Problem

Before I came on as a contract designer, the camo had already been printed with a green cast and the customer was unhappy; I was brought in to correct it. The existing camo pattern had imperfections of its own. Neutral grays are among the hardest things to hold in CMYK, and a Cybertruck’s big flat panels show every shift.

Process

The client supplied only their logo, and not as vector, so I vectorized it. I rebuilt the camo pattern to clean up its flaws, then set up full color management for the printer: profiles, test prints and settings dialed in so true blacks and neutral grays print the same way every run. I also refined the layout for the Cybertruck’s flat panels and hard angles.

Result

A true black and gray camo the client approved, printed and installed, with a color setup that repeats job after job. In some of the live photos the gloss laminate catches the sun and makes the colors look washed out at certain angles, which is exactly why getting the color right was the hardest part.
